To truly protect something – we have to tear it from context and lock it away. Keep it from interaction, from derivation until the moment of danger is truly gone. For Elephant and Castle, an outdated area of south London, this moment of danger is the regeneration; a time when the sound and the atmosphere could be lost forever.
This is a ‘sound capsule’ that will document the sounds of Elephant and Castle as it stands in 2011. These sounds will be locked away, protected and secured. Once the regeneration is complete, the capsule can be opened – and give an accurate account of the Elephant that has passed.
The Elephant and Castle Time Capsule is a way to both protect and transmit an atmosphere from now to the future.
